Citizens and residents of the UAE hiked alongside People of Determination for the launch of Hike Unified, this weekend.

In support of Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019, the group walked the long distance together at Al Khatim, situated between Al Ain and Abu Dhabi, and took in the beautiful scenery of the desert.

Hike Unified, organized by the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019, aims to bring together people of all ages, abilities and fitness levels to hike side-by-side with people of determination in a show of support and unity. The event is part of a series of community-focused events that have been held throughout the UAE in the build-up to Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019.

Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi will be the largest sports and humanitarian event in the world in 2019. From March 14 to 21, more than 7,500 athletes and 3,000 coaches from over 192 nations will participate in 24 officially sanctioned Olympic-style sports in venues throughout Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Unified Sports is a key initiative of Special Olympics, which encourages people with and without intellectual disabilities to play alongside each other on the same team, breaking down stereotypes and promoting social inclusion. The Local Organizing Committee of the upcoming World Games in Abu Dhabi has run several Unified events in the run up to the World Games including the hugely successful Walk Unified and Cycle Unified events.
