So what is the Special Olympics?
The Special Olympics is the world’s largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The organization seeks to transform lives through the joy of sports and there are Special Olympics events held everyday around the world, including local, national and regional competitions.
When is it happening here?
The ninth edition of the MENA Regional Games will return to the Emirates, taking place in Abu Dhabi from March 14-23, 2018. The MENA Games will see 3,000 volunteers and more than 1,200 athletes from 33 countries competing across 16 different sports in the same venues and facilities that will be used for the 2019 World Games. With the support of the community and actively engaged leadership, the MENA Regional Games is the ultimate way to prepare the capital city for next year’s World Games.
What about the World Games? We heard it is biggest event Abu Dhabi will ever host?
The Special Olympics World Games, which alternate between winter and summer sports, is the major event put on every two years. The next Special Olympics Summer World Games will be held in Abu Dhabi from March 14-21, 2019. It’s estimated that 7,000 athletes competing across 24 sports will draw a crowd of a half million people, making it the largest sporting event held in the UAE to date. It’s also the first time that the World Games will be held in the Middle East.
