ADNOC Building, Abu Dhabi Global Market Square, Emirates Palace, Sheikh Zayed Bridge, and other landmarks across the UAE lit up red to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Special Olympics on 20 July 2018.
The international display of unity offered a global symbol of inclusion, supporting Special Olympics’ mission to create inclusive communities worldwide.
More than 225 global landmarks participated in the ‘Light Up for Inclusion’ event, including: the Coca-Cola London Eye & Piccadilly sign in London, UK; the Empire State Building, New York; Sydney Opera House, Australia; the Nelson Mandela Statue in Johannesburg, South Africa; and The Water Cube in Beijing, China, creating a global display of tolerance, respect and celebration of difference.
‘Light Up for Inclusion’ was part of a programme of action-packed activities for the Special Olympics 50th Anniversary celebrations, which took place in Chicago from July 17-21. Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 will mark the culmination of 50th anniversary celebrations, and the start of the next 50 years of the inclusion movement.
