The Special Olympics UAE unified football team put on a stunning performance at the first-ever Special Olympics Unified Cup, which was held in Chicago from July 17-21 as part of the Special Olympics 50th anniversary celebrations.

The team won all three of their group-stage matches impressively, starting with a huge 8-0 win against SO Canada, followed by a 4-0 defeat of SO Russia, and completed by a stunning 7-0 victory against USA Texas.

SO UAE went on to play Uruguay in the semi-finals, narrowly missing out on a final place in a nail-biting 3-2 match.

The team received a jubilant welcome home on arriving back at Abu Dhabi International Airport, with the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 Mascots on hand to greet the players and congratulate them on a fantastic performance in the tournament.

Unified Sports is a key initiative for Special Olympics across the world when people with intellectual disabilities play sport alongside those without.
