Meet The Determined – Basketball star Butti Al Sheezawi

In our series of home team athlete profiles we introduce you to some of the stand out stars from the UAE squad. First up… the three-point-shooting baller Butti Al Sheezawi.

Butti Al Sheezawi

A proud son of the UAE, Al Sheezawi has made his mark on the basketball court and was chosen to compete in an NBA Unified Basketball Game last year. But he did more than just participate - cool and calm under pressure, Al Sheezawi’s three pointer skills were called upon to help the Gladiators secure the win!

“With each shot, the cheers of the crowd shook the floor… such an amazing atmosphere! For me, it was one of the greatest experiences ever," he recalls.

Al Sheezawi has competed in four Regional Games - Abu Dhabi, Algeria, Morocco, and Egypt - and three Special Olympics World Games (Korea, Los Angeles and Austria). He has always loved the game of basketball since his childhood when he watched it on TV with his parents. His favorite players are Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.

The Emirati says that basketball changed his life: “It gives me the motivation and enthusiasm to take good care of my health. I do have intellectual disabilities but that doesn’t make me unable to play. I can play, I can move and I am keen on developing my skills with my team.”

The confident and outgoing athlete is also keen to give back to the movement that has helped him so much. He serves on the Athlete Engagement Committee for the Special Olympics World Summer Games Abu Dhabi 2019 and is a board member for Special Olympics UAE.

“Special Olympics is full of participants with great skills,” Al Sheezawi continues. “It creates a challenge. We must continue to develop our skills and to be prepared for it, to raise our country’s name high and strive to achieve first place.”
