Services for People with Disabilities
The UAE is fully committed to caring for and providing excellent services to people with disabilities. With 59 special needs care and rehabilition centers around the country serving nearly 5,000 students, the UAE is leading the region in caring for this population. The UAE has dedicated health programs, work initiatives, and additional services for people with disabilities and with a fast-growing Special Olympics program, the UAE has led by example when it comes to progressive legislation and inclusion of individuals with special needs.
Throughout the Middle East/North Africa Region, Special Olympics has 23 active chapters. UAE Special Olympics has set a high standard with nearly 5,000 participating athletes and over 250 coaches in 16 sports. The UAE has been a leader in the region, hosting both the 2006 and 2008 Regional Special Olympics Games to Dubai and Abu Dhabi respectively.
The 2019 Special Olympics World Games is the next in a long line of sporting competitions that Abu Dhabi has hosted over the past decade. From the FIFA Club World Cup, to the Bowling World Championship, the FINA Open Water Championships, and Formula 1 Grand Prix, Abu Dhabi has distinguished itself as a leading host city for top international competitions. With the extensive support of the Abu Dhabi Sports Federation, Special Olympics will be able to leverage these high profile events to ensure a successful World Games.
With elite venues like the Adnec & Zayed Sport City, Abu Dhabi Yacht & Sailing Club, New York University, and Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club, the city of Abu Dhabi will provide Special Olympics athletes and spectators with a memorable experience in world-class facilities.
In addition to the World Games, Abu Dhabi will also host the Asian Football Federation Cup in 2019.
Rich Volunteer Experience
Established in 2007, Takatof, a youth volunteer service program, founded by the Emirates Foundation, has worked to mobilize thousands of young people to give back to the UAE community through a variety of volunteer services. Over the past decade, while hosting this wide range of sporting events, Taktaof has developed a rich database of over 60,000 trained volunteers, who will ensure the the 2019 Special Olympics World Games are executed smoothly.
Takatof offers a wide range of volunteer certificates in volunteer essentials, emergency response, sports event management, child safety, and special needs athletes that will provide an outstanding corps of volunteers that will ably represent Abu Dhabi and provide a memorable experience for all attendees of the games.
Through this specialized volunteer training organization, Abu Dhabi will also guarantee language services at all venues.
